Headache
Headache is the most common pain disorder, affecting 65% of the global population. Headaches that are caused by the neck are called, ‘cervicogenic headaches.’ It has been estimated that about 5% of headaches are caused by problems in the neck area. Physiotherapy has an important role to play in their treatment.
Headache sufferers’ necks can become weak as a result of having headaches for months and in many cases, years. By strengthening the neck and regaining control of head and neck movements, headaches can quite often be improved. Even migraine sufferers have reported considerable improvements with using this treatment approach.
Our assessment approach in headache includes assessing joint movement, neck muscle strength and head and neck movement control.
Our treatments include mobilising stiff neck joints, strengthening weak muscles and retraining head and neck movement control. We can use acupuncture, joint mobilisation and our in-house computerised rehabilitation software, NeckLab.
All our treatments for headache are evidence based, meaning that they are based upon published research that demonstrates their effectiveness in headache.
